paper republic stands for stunning vegetable-tanned, full-grain soft cow leather.
We have searched far and wide to find the best leather for our notebooks.
We buy our leather directly (not through wholesalers!) from small family-run tanneries in the heart of Toscana which use absolutely no chrome or chemicals in the tanning process - only natural, non-chemical extracts. The leather is softened with natural fat and has a full anilin finish, meaning that it is dyed only with soluble dyed, which retains the leather natural grain and do not cover the surface with synthetic elements. This ancestral tanning is a slow and artisanal process: it takes on average two months to tan and dye a cow hide.
The vegetable-tanning means that the colour and texture of our leather have a natural look and get a unique patina overt time. The leather smells from day one wonderful, as there are no chemical agents used in the tanning process. It also means that the leather is truly handmade and that colour irregularities are absolutely normal.
You will love seeing and feeling how you leather gets even more beautiful over time. On the right is the grand voyageur of Jérôme, paper republic's founder, after 2 years vs. a brand new leather.
The writing papaer we use in our notebooks is made in one of the best, if not the best, European paper mill - in Sweden. It is a acid-free, wood-free FSC-certified 80gsm natural paper with a nice cream color and a soft touch.
We think that in terms of writing quality it is one of the best paper you can currently find on the market. It feels great to write on, be it with a pen, pencil or fountain pen.
All the covers fom our "refills" are made from a 240 gsm paper from the same Swedish mill. We do not put any lamination on the covers to keep the natural feel of the paper.
our artisans and manufacturers
We are proud to work with some of the best artisans and manufacturers in Europe. We do not only see them as suppliers but as business partners who are part of our republic. They are all passionate about their craft. Most of them are in Central Europe.
All our leather covers are cut and embossed by experts in Vienna and in Hungary. Our notebooks are now almost exclusively printed in Vienna, with some printing also done in Budapest. Our cardboard packaging boxes are produced in Germany. Our wood boxes for the notebooks kits are made in Austria.
